SYNOPSIS: Identify the topic and what the article is proving or arguing about the issue. Is the article trying to convince readers to take a side / it is biased? Explain why this issue is important and whom it may affect.
This topic of this article is the First Nations health care issues and the article proves that the government is improving on it but more needs to be done. The federal government said they will be funding $382 million to fulfill Jordan’s Principle which makes sure that Indigenous children receive access to the same health care and social services available to non-Indigenous children. The principle is named after Jordan River Anderson, who died after to the long debate whether his home-care costs should be paid by the federal government who are responsible for Aboriginal affairs or the provincial government who are responsible for health care. This principle also makes sure that treatment and care will be first priority while funding can be negotiated afterwards. There are also many unanswered questions from the executive director of the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada, Cindy Blackstock. Her questions involve: the timespan of funding, the source of funding, and the principle applying to other government services such as education, culture, and language. I think this article is biased against the government because the "long road to implementation" and "unanswered questions" parts overshadow the government’s efforts. This issue is important because all Canadians should have the right to medical care and any necessary social services. This issue affects the First Nations, the provincial government and the federal government, who are all involved.
CRITICAL QUESTIONS: Based on the article, create 3 key critical QUESTIONS that address:
a) Big Issues: how do the key events connect to larger issues/ challenges?
What issues might the government come across while trying to fulfill the funding?
b) Important considerations: what connections and applications does the topic have to civics?
Why should Indigenous health care be a federal or provincial responsibility?
c) Application: How does this affect society / world?
What are some ways the government funding may affect other Canadian citizens?
